Labour Supporters Leave Card For Mintoff At Caruana Galizia Memorial
A group of Labour supporters has placed a card to former Prime Minister Dom Mintoff at the makeshift memorial to assassinated journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia in front of the law courts.
The card reads: “To our beloved Mintoff, you are always in our heart, we are what we are today because of you. For that, we are grateful. Members of Laburisti sal-Mewt, Laburisti Maghqudin”.
Those two names are of two private Facebook groups dedicated to Labour supporters.
The latest move comes amid escalating debate on the memorial to Caruana Galizia that was spontaneously erected at the Great Siege Monument soon after the journalist’s assassination last October. After the Valletta local council turned down a request by a PL councillor to remove the memorial last week, protestors responded by placing photos of Mintoff and murder victims Raymond Caruana and Karin Grech near the photo of Caruana Galizia.
Activist group Occupy Justice then held a vigil at the memorial in which Mintoff’s photo was placed behind a flower pot, partially obscuring it from sight. The activists said they decided to leave Mintoff’s photo near Caruana Galizia’s to serve as “a memory of the political violence and corruption” of the 1970s and 1980s that the journalist had grown up in.
