Large Tuna Carcass Washes Up Off Wied Iż-Żurrieq Coast

More dead tuna have been washing up ashore in recent days, with one Maltese woman happening upon another large, dead fish while out at sea.

The fish was seen just north of Wied iż-Żurrieq, spotted by some people out on a morning paddle boarding session.

“It appeared to have been dead for a few days,” she told Lovin Malta. “In passing, the stench was unbearable.”

Photos sent to Lovin Malta show the large dead fish strewn across the rocks close to the island’s southern bay, slowly rotting in the bright sun.

The carcass was spotted on the same day another dead tuna was found on the northern coast.

Jet-skiers riding the waves just off St Paul’s Bay were met with a similar sight and recorded their finding with their own footage.

Dead tuna sightings have often appeared on the Maltese shores, with several tuna washing up in the passing years, leading to one pair of Maltese men tying one tuna to a jetski, while another pair of men were filmed struggling to lift their massive find onto the shore.

A grown tuna can land its seller several thousands of euros on the international market, if not tens or even hundreds of thousands if the conditions are right.

Presently, the reason why large dead fish are being washed up along the coast remains unclear.
