Leave Lottery: Six Public/National Holidays Fall On Weekends Across Malta’s 2024 Calendar
No less than six public or national holidays will occur on a Saturday or Sunday throughout 2024 – which means employers will need to add on extra days of leave to make up for the lost days.
Though New Year’s Day fell on a Monday this year, some major holidays will occur over a weekend.
The Feast of St Paul’s Shipwreck (10th February), Feast of St Peter and St Paul (29th June) and Independence Day (21st September) all occur on a Saturday.
Interestingly, Freedom Day (31st March) will occur on Easter Sunday while Victory Day (8th September) and the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (8th December) occur on a Sunday.
According to Maltese law, workers are still entitled to a day of leave for each holiday that falls on a weekend.
This law was removed by the PN back in 2005, but returned in 2021 under PL.
Aside from all this, there will also be two “long weekends” in 2024 – Sette Guigno, which falls on a Friday, and Republic Day, which also occurs on a Friday.
