Liam Debono Sentenced To Five Years In Jail After Police Catch Him Driving Without A License

Liam Debono, the 18-year-old who ran over police sergeant Simon Schembri last year, has been sentenced to five years imprisonment for driving without a license while out on bail.
He has also been fined €60,000 and banned from driving for ten years.
Debono was arrested in May after a plain-clothes officer spotted him driving in Żejtun. The officer said he had to swerve his car to get out of the way, that he had immediately informed the police control room, but decided not to give chase himself.
Debono was eventually apprehended in Triq Mikielanġ Sapiano in Luqa and was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment by magistrate Joe Mifsud this morning.
In May 2018, Debono ran over Simon Schembri in Luqa after the police sergeant stopped him upon finding out that he had been driving without a seatbelt or a license. The hit-and-run incident forced Schembri to amputate his arm.
Debono was charged with attempted murder and is pleading not guilty. He was released on bail last September, subject to several conditions.
