Prime Minister of Libya, Abdulhamid Aldbaiba, has thanked Malta amongst other countries for their support with rescue operations.

A devastating tsunami-like flood has struck Libya, causing approximately 18,000 fatalities and leaving thousands unaccounted for. This catastrophe came after Storm Daniel’s torrential rains caused two dams to break, engulfing the Mediterranean coastal city of Derna, with the force of the waters likened to a tsunami by witnesses.

In the wake of this disaster, numerous countries have mobilized aid. Malta, for instance, dispatched a rescue team that reached Derna reportedly today.  This display of solidarity is evident as various military transport aircraft from Middle Eastern and European countries have begun delivering emergency relief to the North African nation.

Additionally, other international efforts include the UK’s allocation of up to €1.1 million in aid, Egypt’s proposition to set up shelter camps for survivors, France’s dispatch of rescuers and health supplies, and Turkey’s shipment of two field hospitals. The European Union, Algeria, Qatar, Tunisia, and the United Arab Emirates have also extended support, with Palestine and Jordan offering rescue missions and relief goods respectively.

The UN has also committed €10 million to assist the survivors, addressing the humanitarian crisis, including the estimated 30,000 left homeless in Derna.

While aid continues to pour in, challenges persist. Damaged infrastructure, such as collapsed bridges in Derna, obstructed roads, power outages, and disrupted communications pose significant hindrances to relief efforts. Furthermore, risks have been highlighted regarding landmines uprooted by the floods, presenting new threats in previously secure areas.

Rest in peace to all the victims.
