Lidl Vs Pavi: Supermarket Giants Engage In Battle Over Who Sells Cheaper Soft Drinks
Two of Malta’s supermarket giants are in the midst of a price war over which of them sells soft drinks and other products at a cheaper price.
Lidl got things started with a promotion for regular Coca-Cola, which they said cost 79c at their stores and an average of €1.09 at Pavi Qormi, Welbee’s Santa Venera, Greens Mrieħel, Interspar Ħamrun, Smart Birkirkara, and Pama Mosta.
Other promotions positively compared the prices of a LIDL ragù sauce and Kinder Bueno chocolates with the average price of those same products at other supermarkets.
However, Pavi/Pama hit back and said their regular Coke actually costs 75c, which would make it cheaper than Lidl.
Lidl fired back immediately though and produced a recent Pavi shopping receipt, showing it actually cost 99c.
“Something definitely went wrong with their offer, but at Lidl, nothing goes wrong, because we always keep our prices low,” they said.
Pavi has since deleted their Coca-Cola post.
And the battle didn’t end there. Pavi/Pama hit back by comparing their shelf prices for a specific packet of spaghetti with those offered by Lidl, while Lidl responded with a similar promotion for Sprite soft drink cans.
Both supermarket chains are part of an upcoming government scheme that will see the recommended retail price of 400 products slashed by 15% for around nine months.
