Life Network CEO Defends Use Of Down Syndrome Foetuses In Abortion Debate
Life Network CEO Miriam Sciberras has called out Domestic Violence Commissioner Samantha Pace Gasan for insisting that people with Down Syndrome shouldn’t be dragged into the abortion debate.
During a recent Hot Seat debate organised by Lovin Malta and FreeHour, Peppi Azzopardi challenged a pro-choice youth over whether he is in favour of the late-term abortion of foetuses with Down syndrome.
Pace Gasan warned that these claims are “exaggerated” and amount to “scaremongering”, arguing that similar tactics were used to oppose an IVF reform which introduced pre-genetic testing for monogenic disease.
However, Sciberras pointed out that when Pace Gasan was Disability Commissioner, she took a stand in favour of genetic testing despite the CRPD Council opposing such a practice.
“Genetic screening has started with a few listed rare diseases,” Sciberras said.
“Disability groups are very sensitive to eugenic screening, and rightly so, because the screening is rarely done with the intent to serve the patient, but to eliminate him.”

“And yet, again may I prudently remind her that the goal of many countries that have adopted nationwide prenatal testing programs is in fact the targeted elimination of people with Down Syndrome.”
“Currently, around 90% of babies found to have Down Syndrome in the UK are aborted.”
“She states that ‘exaggerated claims of killing an 8-month old fetus with disability do nothing but scare people and trigger guilt in people and mothers of persons with disability.’
