Lilu King’s Brothers Arrested After Accused Of Trying To Influence Witness
Two brothers of Lilu King, the boxer-turned-Paceville businessman , were arrested in the corridors of Malta’s law courts on Monday after a witness testified that they had tried to influence his testimony last week.
The witness was testifying against Ali Ahmed Elmushraty, who was arrested in May on charges of money laundering, tax evasion and involvement in organised crime.
Defense lawyer Franco Debono warned that the witness, who is an ex-business partner of Elmushraty, should be careful as he is part of the business transactions being investigated for money laundering.
After questioning, the prosecution told Magistrate Donatella Frendo Dimech that they felt the witness was afraid and was holding back on details initially revealed before testifying in court.
When he was asked if he was approached by someone prior to his appearance in court, he said he had received a phone call from Elmushraty’s ex, a number of calls from private numbers that he didn’t answer and then by one of Elmushraty’s brothers.
These phone calls all happened after his arraignment.
On 7th June, the brothers told the witness they wanted to talk to him and arrived later at the Waterfront, where the witness was working.
The brothers asked him to testify that the Range Rover bearing the registration plate “Lilu King” belonged to him.
Elmushraty had paid for the vehicle, which cost €100,000 but had it registered in the witness’s name because he didn’t have a Maltese ID at the time.
He eventually wanted the vehicle to be transferred into Elmushraty’s name, as he had garnered some €11,000 in fines. However, a garnishee order blocked the transfer.
The two brothers were arrested immediately after the witness’ statement.
Elmushraty is one of several people being accused of links to organised crime connected to drug trade.
Police surveilled Elmushraty for three months, alerted by a particularly luxurious lifestyle, despite applying for refugee status and having no declared income in Malta.
In a previous sitting, the court learnt how Elmushraty would spend around €5,000 a month on his extravagant lifestyle, which he actively showcased on social media.
The boxer and “self-employed” entrepreneur was arrested around late May, with large quantities of cash, jewellery and pricey clothes found in the apartments. These were confiscated along with a number of luxury vehicles.
The case continues next week.
