Listen: Gżira Mayor Publishes Audio Showing LESA ‘Refusing To Do Their Job’ And Tow Cars Away

Angered by the authorities’ refusal to enforce the law against cars parked in tow-away zones, Gżira mayor Conrad Borg Manche has published audio of a man’s complaint to LESA.

In the audio, a man can be heard informing a LESA customer car official that a car was parked in an area that had been designated as a tow-away zone.

“It’s no longer in our hands, it’s in the council’s hands,” the LESA official said.

Borg Manche blasted LESA for “not wanting to do its job” and for shifting the responsibility for towing enforcement onto local councils.

“Is this the new way to mock councils?” the PL mayor questioned. “Can the supposed authorities tell us what they expect from us? Do they know that enforcement isn’t our job and that we cannot call car owners to remove their cars because we don’t have their contact numbers?”

“Is this being done on purpose to mock us and create street chaos? It’s a total disservice to councils and law-abiding citizens, and it’s sickening.”

Towing enforcement has been in limbo since July 2022, when a court ruled that only government entities – and not private individuals – have the power to erect ‘No Parking’ signs.

Both LESA and Transport Malta have appealed the decision, with a final ruling expected later this month.

PN MP and local councils spokesperson Darren Carabott questioned why anyone would bother paying to reserve a parking space for the sake of a crane or skip if people can park there without consequence anyway.

“Nothing has changed since July 2022 and the more time passes, the more people are abusing the situation because they know that nothing can happen to them,” he said.

“The court will take a decision in two weeks’ time but the problem will probably need to be resolved through a proper law and not just a sentence.”
