State witness Melvin Theuma is back in court this morning to testify in the compilation of evidence against Yorgen Fenech, the man charged with masterminding the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

Fenech was arrested in November 2019 after Theuma was granted a presidential pardon to reveal all he knows about the murder plot, which acted as a middleman in. Fenech denies the charges.

In the last sitting, a relative of Theuma’s refused to testify in order to avoid incriminating herself given that she was facing separate proceedings linked to financial crimes.

Last month, the court heard Caruana Galizia’s son Matthew explain how she was working on a massive leak of documents from the Electrogas power station.

Caruana Galizia explained how he and his mother had been working on the documents together and had started to zero in on Fenech.

He shared emails obtained from the leak and Fenech’s phone, showing how the businessman had regrets about the project.

Caruana Galizia’s testimony also revealed the existence of a WhatsApp group called ‘No Valletta No Party’, which included both Fenech and former deputy Police Commissioner Silvio Valletta.

Magistrate Rachel Montebello is presiding.

Superintendent Keith Arnaud and Inspector Kurt Zahra are prosecuting, together with deputy Attorney General Philip Galea Farrugia.

Fenech’s defence lawyers are Marion Camilleri, Charles Mercieca and Gianluca Caruana Curran.

Lawyers Jason Azzopardi and Therese Comodini Cachia are appearing parte civile for the Caruana Galizia family.
