Maltese authorities swooped in on a farm in Qormi this morning where they found 100 migrants living in poor conditions. The operation came after an enforcement notice was placed on the land by the Planning Authority.
A Planning Authority spokesperson told Lovin Malta that the operation, which is currently ongoing, came after the authority had flagged the farm previously for its poor condition, and that the Planning Authority had now taken “direct action” to close off the farm.
The migrants are currently being removed from the farm, and the PA spokesperson said they didn’t know what would happen to the people found living on the farm.
NET News reported that that the farm was split into various rooms, with each room featuring a number of beds. It was reported that a severe lack of hygiene could be noted. It was also reported that the migrants had a residence permit from the Italian government, meaning they probably travelled to Malta after arriving in Italy.
