Nationwide Distribution Of New Bins To Maltese Households Means You Can Now Help Farmers Out With Your Own Soil-Improving Fertiliser
Every household in Malta will be receiving a snazzy new organic waste bin to make rubbish separation easier, giving us now an option to separate organic waste too. In the coming weeks, a total of 150,000 of the new bins will be distributed nationwide.
People will be encouraged to keep these green baskets in their kitchen to dispose of food and organic scraps. Times of Malta reported that these bags will be collected three times a week by local waste collectors in order to generate energy from gas at Malta’s waste processing facilities. This waste will be used to create soil improving fertilisers.
Distribution of these bins started out today in Ħamrun, with the island-wide project forming part of the government’s plans to reduce the amount of organic waste which ends up in landfills.
Since we generally throw our food scraps in those pesky black bins, most of it becomes unusable after being mixed in with other materials.
More bins will be handed out to households in order to encourage separation of glass, sanitary waste and recyclables.
Collection of these waste bags will start by the end of October.
