261 Suicides Registered In Malta Over The Last Nine Years

New alarming figures have shed light on the amounts of suicides carried out in the country over the last nine years.

During a recent parliamentary session, Health Minister Chris Fearne confirmed there were a total of 261 suicides in Malta between 2013 and 2022.

Fearne presented a table with the breakdown, revealing that over a span of 10 years, 26 individuals under the age of 25 tragically took their own lives. The age group between 25 and 34 accounted for 48 instances, while those between 35 and 44 saw 58 cases.

The 45 to 54 age group witnessed 50 suicides, followed by 46 in the 55 to 64 age group. Additionally, 17 individuals between the ages of 65 and 74 and 16 individuals over the age of 75 were affected.

Noteworthy years include 2015 and 2021, which both recorded 34 suicides, while 2014 had 32 suicides.

Conversely, the lowest number of cases occurred in 2019 with 21 instances.
