Celebrating a significant milestone in Malta’s literary history, the Central Public Library in Floriana commemorated its 40th anniversary. An inauguration of the first phase of renovation works with an investment of €340,000 was unveiled by Minister for National Heritage Owen Bonnici.
During this initial phase, the ground floor underwent an impressive transformation. The space now boasts new ceilings and floors, restored apertures, and a sleek glass partitioning system that infuses the area with versatility.
These renovations were complemented by various accessibility enhancements, ensuring that the library is welcoming to all.
Minister Bonnici emphasised the significant progress made by Malta Libraries over the past decade. Notably, the transition to a computerised system that now serves over a hundred libraries, both public and private, and the introduction of a free electronic book service for library members of all ages.
With this commitment to advancement, it is no surprise that investment is now directed toward renovating the administrative base of the entire Public Libraries Network.

Cheryl Falzon, the National Librarian and CEO, spoke of the library’s untapped potential and the ongoing efforts to enhance both its services and physical infrastructure. The second phase of renovations has already begun, focusing on the adult library section.
In the months to come, visitors can expect not only traditional bookshelves but also engaging reading hubs, a makerspace where the public can explore 3D printing, Virtual Reality, and Augmented Reality experiences.
Additionally, a variety of educational and recreational courses and activities will be offered, further enriching the library’s offerings.
To mark the occasion, Malta Libraries organised a vibrant program of events for the public in collaboration with Heritage Malta’s Digitisation Unit, the Saving Our Blue Campaign, and the National Literacy Agency. This diverse range of activities ensures that the library’s anniversary celebrations extend beyond the building itself, engaging and inspiring the community at large.
