61% Of Maltese Believe Feminism ‘Has Gone Too Far’ In Latest Eurobarometer Survey
A Eurobarometer survey found that 61% of Maltese respondents believe feminism has “gone too far,” placing Malta second in Europe behind Cyprus for this view.
Of the 507 surveyed, 33% disagreed, and 4% were unsure. Despite this skepticism, 79% agreed that men would benefit from greater gender equality.
The report also highlighted persistent gender stereotypes. A significant 63% of respondents believe women should prioritise family responsibilities, and 46% see a woman’s primary role as taking care of her home and family—10 percentage points higher than the EU average.
Furthermore, 69% think family life suffers when mothers work full-time, compared to an EU average of 51%.
An overwhelming 88% of respondents said financial independence is equally important for both men and women.
Only 10% believed men should have the final say in family decisions, far below the EU average of 20%.
Additionally, 75% disagreed that having children is more fulfilling for women than men, surpassing the EU average of 53%.
The survey’s findings follow another Eurobarometer report revealing troubling views on sexual violence, with one in five Maltese respondents saying a woman is partly to blame if she is assaulted while intoxicated.
