A Milestone Project Breathes New Life Into The Fabled Old Church Of Our Saviour

A captivating mission has taken flight, aimed to transform one of our community’s best-kept treasures.
This project, a cornerstone of the Local Councils Scheme Call of 2022, is laser-focused on resurrecting the grandeur of the iconic Old Church of Our Saviour in Lija.

The Restoration and Preservation Department, took on the initiative in June 2023 and plan to unveil the masterpiece by September 2024.
“This church, with its rich history and architectural significance, deserves the meticulous attention it’s receiving. Thanks to all those dedicated to this project; your work ensures that this piece of history remains alive and appreciated for years to come,” Minister for the National Heritage, Owen Bonnici stated.

It’s not just a fresh coat of paint—this is a full-blown rejuvenation!
From chiseling away years of grime to conjuring new stonework, Architect Jean Frendo outlined the restoration plan, “These involve cleaning the church’s surfaces, restoring the original appearance by removing cement layers, using a special mortar to repair exposed joints, replacing worn stones, and sculpting new decorations to replace damaged ones.” The task force will also be resealing cracks to lock out moisture and giving the windows a glossy makeover. Talk about a transformation!
