The Institute of Maltese Journalists (IĠM) has condemned an incident in which ONE News journalist Francesco Borg was obstructed and aggressively shoved by members of the Nationalist Party while seeking comments from the party leader Bernard Grech and MP Toni Bezzina during last Monday’s protest outside of parliament.

This is the second such case reported to the IĠM in recent weeks. However, the Nationalist Party has not publicly condemned such actions.

In a statement, the IĠM called on all political parties to take responsibility for the conduct of individuals within their circles, urging them to denounce any behaviour that hinders journalists from carrying out their duties.

“These incidents should not be tolerated,” it said, pointing to the threats of press freedom which the IĠM said should never be compromised and that journalists should be free to work in any environment without being threatened.

The IĠM also noted that a police report has been filed regarding the incident, calling on law enforcement to act promptly.
