Alex Borg Slams ‘U-Turn’ By Robert Abela, Reveals PN Election Plans

Robert Abela’s declaration that he will not be calling an early election is “another U-turn” by the prime minister, Opposition leader Alex Borg said on Sunday.

Addressing a PN activity in Senglea, Borg noted that Abela had previously indicated he would call a snap election if the PN elected a new leader, claiming this would destabilise the country.

“It doesn’t matter. Whenever it [the election] comes, we will be prepared to provide hope for Malta,” Borg said.

The Opposition leader announced he will be contesting the election on the Gozo district, a first for a PN leader. Born in Gozo, Borg also said he will be contesting a second, as yet unrevealed, district.

Questioned about recent opinion polls, Borg said the PN still has work to do. “Let us be honest, it is still a loss. Whether the gap has halved, or is down to 7,000. Losing by one goal to nil is still a loss. There is still a lot to do. Let us roll up our sleeves, and knock on every single family’s door in Malta and Gozo,” he said.

Borg promised that he would stick to his pledge to publish the PN’s audited accounts within the first 100 days of his leadership. Speaking about the timeline, he said he has spoken to the party’s auditors, who have assured him they will meet the deadline as reported by Times Of Malta.

Earlier this year, Times of Malta reported that the PN failed to file its statement of accounts with the Electoral Commission for 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024, and is missing donation reports for 2022, 2023, and 2024.

The Opposition leader also questioned how the government plans to fund its move to turn the abandoned White Rocks complex in Pembroke into a national park.

“It is a PR stunt. How can they go about this without even a single line item dedicated to it in the budget,” Borg said, noting that the plan was unveiled days after Finance Minister Clyde Caruana’s October budget speech.

Borg touched upon the announcement that PN MP Ryan Callus will not be contesting the next election. While thanking him for his service, Borg said Callus will continue to help the party as part of its campaign team. He also highlighted that other MPs, like Claudette Buttigieg, will continue supporting the party despite stepping down from parliamentary contests.

“I have no doubt that Claudette and anyone else who decides not to contest will continue helping the party,” he said, noting the growing volunteer activity at PN headquarters in Pieta.

Borg accused the government of quietly introducing a legal notice that raises the registration costs of new medicines in Malta, despite budget claims of no new taxes. He warned this could lead to foreign producers leaving the country and increase costs for pharmacies.

On policy, Borg announced that a PN government would provide free doctor services for elderly people and pensioners in acute cases, allowing them to use their family doctor to ensure continuity of treatment.

The measure would be optional for both patients and private doctors, and Borg said it would also reduce pressure on primary care and hospitals.
