Alex Borg Unveils Ambitious Vision For Gozo, Slams Delayed Projects
During the debate on the 2026 Budget Estimates for the Ministry for Gozo and Planning, PN Leader Alex Borg laid out an ambitious roadmap for the island, focusing on sustainable development, improved services, and a higher quality of life for Gozitans.
Borg didn’t hold back in criticising the Labour Government for failing to deliver on repeated promises. He highlighted long-delayed projects, including the new 430-bed hospital, the Marsalforn breakwater, MCAST expansion, and the new Court, which has been stalled for over 13 years.
The PN Leader proposed concrete measures to tackle Gozo’s persistent challenges. These include introducing new vessels and reliable connectivity supported by reforms at Mġarr Port, upgrading infrastructure across the island, and establishing a clear timeline for the new hospital.
He also called for a university campus offering creative and sustainable courses and an Innovation Hub to support SMEs in sectors like FinTech and MedTech.
On daily life, Borg stressed the need for an integrated traffic-management plan for Victoria, accessible social and medical services, and a Gozo Tourism Authority alongside an ITS for small-scale, high-quality tourism.
Regarding planning and the environment, Borg proposed a modern, efficient Planning Authority that cuts bureaucracy and prioritises high-quality development.
He suggested schemes to reward exceptional projects, including fast-tracked approvals, tax incentives, and access to green financing. Above all, he emphasised that development must strengthen local communities while safeguarding the environment, ensuring growth and sustainability move hand in hand.
Borg’s speech paints a picture of ambition and reform, but also serves as a sharp critique of years of delayed projects, signalling the PN’s readiness to push for meaningful change in Gozo.
