Almost 8 In Every 10 Calls To Malta’s Emergency Hotline Last Year Didn’t Actually ‘Need 112’s Help’

The vast majority of calls made to Malta’s emergency number throughout last year ended up not being genuine, it has now been revealed.

Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri shared the worrying statistic in a post last night, while celebrating the day dedicated to the country’s emergency hotline 112.

Camilleri visited Bormla’s primary school to not only celebrate the day, but also help raise awareness on how to use the number “wisely”.

“From 408,000 phone calls in 2024, only 90,000 actually needed 112’s help,” Camilleri finished.

This would mean that nearly 78% – or just under eight out of 10 – of all calls made to 112 throughout the year would’ve been prank calls, invalid requests, or ones which would not have actually concerned the country’s emergency services.
