Another 170 Residential Roads In Malta To Be Rebuilt At Value Of Around €70 Million

Transport Minister Ian Borg announced today that another call for offers is being issued by Infrastructure Malta to rebuild 170 residential roads around Malta.

“We came to visit these roads less than a month after we began works, which didn’t only include a layer of asphalt but also the installation of services, the building of foundations and the building of pavements – aspects which are synonymous with the way our work towards the improvement of infrastructure is being done,” Dr Borg said at an activity held on a road in Żabbar that was being repaved.

“I am satisfied that these same families will now live in a more appropriate environment as befits every family and resident of our country’s roads”

This call comes just weeks after a previous call was made regarding the repaving of 120 roads, resulting in five different consortia of contractors who are currently carrying out works on five sets of residential roads around Malta.

The new call for 170 residential roads will be divided into six sets, with 52 kilometres of roads and 85 kilometres of pavements being built as part of the works.

He said that this work will include investments in the replacement and extension of services where necessary, work on pavements and storm water systems, foundations, asphalt and even signage, safety systems and other facilities which are added after the road is complete.

The rebuilding scheme is set to cost €70 million

“Therefore, today we continue to witness the delivery of this government’s pledge – a pledge which will be financing €700 million for the roads which are used by residents every day. We started with 120 roads and we are continuing with another 170 roads. We will continue with this work at this pace and we are working so that everything can be done at the highest standards and quality,” said Dr Borg.

The Minister said that once again Infrastructure Malta will bind all bidders to confirm their technical ability to finish work within the stipulated timeframes and at the set quality and safety standards.

This is to ensure that works on residential roads are complete in the shortest possible time without compromising quality or safety. Contractors who are delaying without justification are being fined and works that do not meet the desired quality are being redone at the expense of the contractor.

He said that Infrastructure Malta will continue its work in this sector, working hand in hand with local councils and other stakeholders while also considering the requests for assistance by several residents.

“Because this is our commitment – appropriate infrastructure on every level to bring the benefits of a strong country to residents, families and businesses. Let’s continue working to raise our country’s standard of living,” he concluded.
