A 39-year-old man from Santa Venera has died inside Corradino Correctional Facility, making him the latest in a string of deaths over the last few months.

The man, who was sectioned in Division 2, reportedly took his own life using a blanket, according to Net News. His lifeless body was found by prison wardens yesterday evening at around 5:15pm.

The man was facing charges related to attempted murder and domestic violence and had previously served sentences inside prison. In 2013 he started a sentence related to attempted murder, and in March, 2018, he allegedly attempted to attack the same woman he had previously attacked using acid in Marsa.

A magisterial inquiry has been opened following his death, as well as an internal investigation in the prison.

His death comes just three months after two men died inside Malta’s main prison, while another man died around nine months ago under mysterious circumstances.
