Award-Winning Service Dog Peter Who Sniffed Out €598,859 In Undeclared Cash Retires

K9 Peter has officially retired after aiding the customs department for four years in discovering undeclared cash and smuggled tobacco.

”All in all, Peter bagged 84 positive hits, 27 of which were related to cash seizures, detecting €598,859 in undeclared cash. Peter also sniffed out 54 other cases related to tobacco seizures, totalling to 150kg, and three narcotics cases; one case of cannabis and another two of cocaine,” the customs department stated in a press release.

Peter won the Best Dog in Uniform award during Malta’s Animal Honours Award ceremony, amongst other awards he’s acquired throughout the past few years. 

The department bid him farewell and are grateful for ”his stellar service”.

Peter has now been adopted by one of their employees and will continue to live a happy life, with a loving family.

The new K9 recruit is named Dezerto, he was donated to the department by Tat-Tarġa Kennels, in 2022.

”Peter has undoubtedly left a legacy and will always be remembered for his excellent olfactory skills, obedience and docility,” the K9 department stated.
