Behind The Scenes: Sky’s WW2 Drama Has Started Filming Its Second Season In Malta… Full-On Replica Submarine And All
The production of the second series of Das Boot, a Sky TV production about World War II, is well underway at Malta’s Kalkara Film Studios.
The compelling series is set in 1942, and follows the incredible story of the crew aboard the German submarine U-612.
The submarine used to film the series is a non-diving replica which was built on the island as the ‘modified’ S-33 for the film U-571, which was also shot in Malta.
“The fact that both seasons for Das Boot were shot at our studio reflects a success story,” the Malta Film Commission said on Wednesday on a tour of the studio facilities. “This wouldn’t have been possible without our unique water tank facilities and talented local crew. Relationships like these will ensure that our reputation is enhanced and most importantly staying committed to providing a sustainable industry.”
As a production, Das Boot has benefited from a 40% cash rebate over last year’s 25% cash rebate, which made Malta even more attractive for productions such as this.
240 people have been employed in the production of the series, with nearly half of them (48%) being Maltese.
“Productions like Das Boot are vital for a self-sustained filming industry”
Aside from working on the production, local crew members were given an opportunity to showcase their talents and enhance them further, the Malta Film Commission said. Indeed, a number of trainees were introduced to the industry and given first-hand experience thanks to the ‘opportunity for all directory’.
The Commission also noted that Malta has experienced a direct spend of nearly €3,000,000 over a span of two months thanks to the production.
