Birkirkara Recorded The Highest Number Of Traffic Accidents In Last Three Months Of 2023 – NSO

Road traffic fatalities witnessed a concerning rise during the fourth quarter of 2023, according to data released by Malta’s National Statistics Office (NSO).

In the last three months there were seven road traffic fatalities in total, involving five males and two females.

Compared to the same period in 2022, road traffic accidents and casualties surged by 4.2% and 12.1%, respectively.

The data revealed that a number of 3,977 traffic accidents were recorded. Passenger cars were implicated in the majority of these incidents, accounting for 55.3% of the total crashes. Additionally, motorcycles were involved in one-third of the reported accidents.

The period between 9am and 11:59pm posed the highest risk for drivers, with a greater number of accidents reported during this time frame compared to others.

 

It was also revealed that Tuesdays saw the highest number of road traffic accidents, accounting for 16.7% of the total cases during the fourth quarter of 2023.

On the other hand, the highest number of road traffic causalities were recorded on Fridays.

Among the regions in Malta, Birkirkara registered the highest number of road traffic accidents, with 287 reported cases during the last three months of 2023.

Every district except for the Southeastern and Gozo and Comino districts experienced a rise in road traffic accidents compared to the fourth quarter of the previous year. The Northern Harbour district saw the most significant percentage increase in road traffic accidents at 10.4%, followed by the Northern district at 6.6%.
