Blinded By The Morning Sun, Żabbar Councillor Crashes Into Parked Container In Valletta

A Żabbar councillor has opened up about an “immensely ugly” experience she had in a two-lane road in Valletta – an experience that other Maltese people have also unfortunately experienced.

“Yesterday I didn’t start my day like most people. I had an ugly incident with my car as I was driving to work,” Ghislaine Bongailas said in a now-deleted Facebook post about what happened to her in Quarry Wharf, Valletta.

“In a two-lane street, between 6:30am and 7:30am, anyone who is coming from the direction of the waterfront will see nothing because of the sun directly hitting the eyes of the driver. It’s a main road that many people pass through at those times to go and begin their workdays.”

“In the middle of the street, taking up a whole lane was this parked and empty container left from the night before. There are two things you can do:

1. You don’t see anything due to the sun and you end up like me

2. You try to over-take because you realised it was there and you have a head-on collision in the other lane.”

She went on to thank Our Lady of Grace for getting her through the accident with nothing more than some bruises and welt on her neck, and said: “thank God there wasn’t a passenger with me because it would have been a total tragedy”.

She noted that this wasn’t the first accident of this type to occur on that particular road, and hoped writing about her accident would lead to some measures being taken to prevent it from happening again

“Myself, and those that crashed before me, had it ‘good’ to a certain point – but we can never say what could happen in the near future,” she said.
