Bonnici Brothers Consortium Secures €600 Million Contract For Magħtab Waste-To-Energy Plant
The French consortium Paprec, in partnership with Maltese firm Bonnici Bros, has just secured a substantial €600 million contract for the construction and operation of a waste-to-energy plant in Magħtab.
Paprec Energies International-BBL Malta, the entity responsible for the project, has been designated to oversee the plant’s operations for a period of 20 years.
WasteServ reported that the selection process resulted in three high-quality, compliant bids, all from well-established international consortia in the waste-to-energy sector.
These consortia included Hitachi Zosen Inova AG – Terna SA, FCC Medioambiente Internacional SLU, and Paprec.
Paprec Energies submitted the lowest bid, with Hitachi Zosen submitting the highest bid, while FCC Medioambiente’s proposal fell in between at €616 million. Paprec initially quoted €617 million, while Hitachi Zosen’s original offer stood at €984 million.
Paprec International’s bid involves collaboration between the French waste management company and the local construction giants, Bonnici Bros.
“The waste-to-energy facility will be processing 192,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste per year, which waste will be converted into green energy,” Wasteserv said in a statement.
Additionally, WasteServ anticipates having two other significant tenders in progress by the time work commences on-site: one for an EU-funded organic processing plant and the other for a skip management facility.
These initiatives align with the ECOHIVE strategy and are aimed at propelling Malta towards a fully circular economy in waste management.
