900 Cabs Blocked From Ride-Hailing Apps Over Garaging Violations

Malta’s ride-hailing platforms Bolt, eCabs, and Uber have been directed to suspend approximately 900 Y-plated cabs due to their operators’ failure to comply with garaging requirements.

The move, announced in an official notice by Transport Malta, is part of an effort to clamp down on abusive on-street parking practices.

The cabs, which represent about 20% of the 5,000 active Y-plates on Maltese roads, were removed from the platforms after repeated grace periods to secure Public Service Garage (PSG) spaces expired.

Under Maltese law, operators of Y-plated vehicles—used for rental or ride-hailing services—are required to maintain a PSG. This ensures that vehicles are parked in a dedicated garage when not in use and meet strict safety, insurance, and maintenance standards.

A PSG licence is issued by Transport Malta following the approval of a Planning Authority permit.

Despite the suspension of these vehicles, industry insiders suggest the decision is unlikely to affect cab prices or availability. The enforcement coincides with a post-holiday lull in demand, meaning there is still sufficient supply to meet customers’ needs.

The crackdown highlights ongoing efforts by Transport Malta to ensure compliance within the ride-hailing sector, promoting safer and more regulated operations on Maltese roads.

This latest move underscores the importance of adhering to garaging rules, as noncompliant operators face mounting consequences. Whether this will lead to long-term changes in the industry remains to be seen.
