Caritas Founder Dun Victor Grech Passes Away Aged 95

Monsignor Victor Grech, a beloved pioneer in social work and rehabilitation in Malta, has passed away at the age of 95.
Born in Bormla in 1929, he dedicated his life to supporting the most vulnerable, particularly those struggling with drug addiction.
As Director of Caritas Malta, he introduced professional social services, launched Malta’s first therapeutic community for drug rehabilitation, and established residential shelters for those in need.
His influence extended beyond Malta, serving on the boards of Caritas Europa and Caritas Internationalis, and his dedication earned him prestigious honours, including the European Citizen’s Prize in 2012 and Officer of the National Order of Merit in 2013.
His passing has been met with deep sorrow and heartfelt tributes. PN Leader Bernard Grech honoured him as “a shield of love and hope for the most vulnerable,” adding that “his legacy will live on in every heart he helped, every family he changed, and every soul that found a new path thanks to him.”
Prime Minister Robert Abela recalled the powerful impact Mons. Grech had on those he helped, saying, “He never looked at faces, only hearts. His embrace at the start of a new journey meant everything to those in need.”
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola described him as “a Maltese saint who will live on in our hearts forever,” emphasising that “his work must not only continue but be strengthened and expanded for future generations.”
In a statement, Archdiocese Malta paid tribute to his unwavering dedication, saying, “We thank God for the faithfulness of this priest to the Church and Maltese society. May he rest in eternal peace.”
Malta bids farewell to a man whose compassion, leadership, and tireless work changed countless lives, leaving behind a legacy that will not be forgotten.
Lovin Malta extends its sincerest condolences to Victor’s family.
