After weeks of lobbying by the Malta Developers Association, Transport Malta has announced that it will be extending construction hours to start earlier than 9:30am.

Contractors vehicles will now be allowed to operate in “secondary roads” as long as they do not obstruct traffic.

“MDA is very grateful that the Chairman of Transport Malta together with his team took note of the difficulties caused to these contractors and we are very satisfied with the outcome and agreement reached,” MDA President Sandro Chetcuti concluded.

Vehicles such as lifters, concrete mixers and light cranes, trucks transporting building bricks and other ‘wide’ vehicles will be allowed to operate under these new rules.

The decision was taken after the MDA highlighted the many “challenges” construction workers and contractors face as they build all over the island. It is unknown whether the challenges faced by local residents were mentioned as well.

Following the decision, Transport Malta is set to send out a memo to all local councils announcing the new rules.
