Court Asks Telecom Companies For Call Logs Of Key Maltese Politicians Over Caruana Galizia Murder

MaltaToday reported that Magistrate Anthony Vella has requested call logs from Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, Opposition Leader Adrian Delia and Economy Minister Chris Cardona’s phones as part of the inquiry into Daphne Caruana Galizia’s murder.

Lovin Malta has reached out to the Government and Opposition for comment.

“The PM was never asked for call logs. From media reports we understand that the request was made directly by the Magistrate to telecom companies,” a spokesman for the Prime Minister said.

PN Leader Adrian Delia told Lovin Malta he was not aware of this request but he had no problem with his call logs being given to the investigation. “I will not only cooperate fully but if there are any permissions or waivers required from me I will gladly sign anything that grants full consent for investigators to look at every single call, SMS or other forms of communication. I won’t comment on the others, but when it comes to me I will gladly grant full access.”

It is not yet clear whether or not permission is needed by the people involved in order to get the requested call logs.

According to Maltatoday, Government sources raised doubt on the Magistrate’s request, arguing that the Prime Minister’s logs contained sensitive data. They even brought up the laptop issue from a couple of months ago.

Even though the police had filed a judicial request to the Magistrate himself for access to the laptop, he did not act on it until late April — when a family friend of Caruana Galizia’s passed the laptop on to the German Federal Police instead of local authorities.
