Court Reveals That Keith Schembri Was In Possession Of Classified Police Emails
Former OPM chief-of-staff, Keith Schembri, was found to have been holding onto a confidential police email, a criminal proceeding revealed earlier today.
Schembri, who served as former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat’s chief-of-staff, has been charged with perjury and violating the Official Secrets Act, following a long-term investigation into Yorgen Fenech’s claim that Schembri disclosed sensitive information to him.
The information in question was regarding the case of Daphne Caruana Galizia’s murder in 2017, in which Fenech is being charged for complicity.
In the most recent revelation of evidence, as reported by Times of Malta, the prosecution brought forward information that suggested Schembri had access to sensitive police information about two Maltese people who were mistakenly arrested in Sicily.
Allegedly, a WhatsApp conversation between Schembri and Fenech, included a discussion regarding an Interpol investigation into this case, that Schembri claimed a “solution was found” for.
The investigation in question was in regards to the wrongful arrest of two Maltese nationals in Sicily who were apprehended after a misunderstanding relating to the name of an unspecified company.
The two were supposedly friends of Fenech’s, highlighting a possible motive for him approaching Schembri for help.
In light of this, the defence rebutted, claiming that the evidence was irrelevant to the case of Caruana Galizia’s death, and, despite it being true, a point was made that Schembri’s possession of the email was still dubious and illegal.
Lawyers Mark Vassallo and Edward Gatt also appeared for Schembri.
Superintendent Hubert Cini and police inspector Shaun Friggieri are prosecuting.
Jason Azzopardi and Therese Comodini Cachia were parte civile.
