Energy Minister Miriam Dalli urged the Nationalist Party to end its “scaremongering campaign” following last Sunday’s power outage.
Speaking in Parliament yesterday evening, Dalli said, “I call on the Opposition to cease these scaremongering campaigns and misinformation, because if no actions were taken, power would not have been restored within an hour.”

The parliamentary session discussed the income and expenditure of the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA), which falls under Dalli’s ministry, where the Minister briefly touched upon last weekend’s nationwide blackout.

Yesterday morning, Enemalta announced that the Malta-Sicily interconnector was shut down on Sunday morning for maintenance on the switchgear at the Magħtab terminal station. During the testing of the switchgear at Magħtab, several distribution feeders tripped at 6:08 pm. As a result, a number of machines at Delimara also shut down. The distribution feeders were switched back on, and full power supply was restored by 7:26 pm.

Dalli explained in Parliament that the emergency power plant in Delimara had been inspected by the ERA and complies with IPCC directives. She then went on to say that “while it is true that the interconnector was planned under the Nationalist Party government, it was the Labour government that executed the work on it.”

Prior to Dalli’s address, PN MP Darren Carabott claimed the power outage demonstrated the country’s complete dependence on the interconnector installed by a Nationalist administration.
