Daphne Caruana Galizia’s Killers Claim Their Human Rights Are Being Breached In Prison

The two convicted murderers of Daphne Caruana Galizia are now reportedly hitting back at their prison conditions.

Alfred and George Degiorgio, serving a 40-year term for their role as hitmen in Caruana Galizia’s assassination, have lodged a judicial protest alleging ‘inhuman and discriminatory’ treatment at Corradino Correctional Facility.

The Degiorgio brothers contend they are being denied the same privileges that their fellow inmates receive.

Alfred Degiorgio particularly cited the prison authorities’ refusal to grant him permission to visit his housebound brother, arguing it is unjust, especially as other inmates are frequently allowed leave to attend to family matters.

Their protest points out the irony of such denial when the Principal Forensic Psychologist recently detailed efforts to connect inmates with their families.

In February, the prisons faced backlash when George Degiorgio was photographed at a family baptism party, seemingly enjoying a leave privilege. Alfred Degiorgio’s subsequent request for leave to attend his daughter’s birthday party, however, was denied.

The brothers also express their grievance at being kept in Division 5 of the facility. They assert that inmates in this division are denied specific privileges, including the right to work and access to the library, which are commonly granted to prisoners in other divisions.
