Disgruntled About The Pembroke High-Rise? Here’s How You Can Try And Stop It From Happening
Three local councils and eight NGOs will be hoping the social media outrage at the recent approval of a high-rise project in Pembroke can be turned into something more tangible.
A crowdfunding initiative has been launched to raise €15,000 to fund legal action against the Planning Authority’s decision, including an appeal before the Environment and Planning Review Tribunal.
“This project will negatively affect people’s lives and the environment, and was approved in spite of the over 4,500 objections submitted to the PA,” the entities said in a joint statement. “We are determined to fight this till the end, and we know that we can win. Each financial contribution, big or small, matters a lot.”
The Pembroke, St Julian’s and Swieqi local councils are joined by Malta’s three largest environmental NGOs Din l-Art Ħelwa, Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar and BirdLife Malta, as well as by Moviment Graffitti, the Ramblers Association, Nature Trust, Friends of the Earth Malta and Żminijietna – Voice of the Left.
The db City Centre Project project, which will consist of a tower of luxury apartments, a Hard Rock Hotel and other high-end establishments, was approved last month by ten votes to four. It was later revealed that the Planning Authority had paid over €11,000 on a private jet to fly one of its board members from Sicily to Malta, a decision that was criticised by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and Infrastructure Minister Ian Borg.
