Animal sanctuaries across Malta have received over €391,000 in financial aid over the past two legislatures, with additional maintenance grants of up to €10,000 per sanctuary introduced in 2024.
In response to a parliamentary question by MP Janice Chetcuti, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights confirmed that a total of €391,128.28 was allocated to licensed sanctuaries between the last quarter of 2021 and the end of 2024. This funding was provided through various financial aid schemes to support the welfare and upkeep of animal sanctuaries.
For 2024, a new Sanctuary Maintenance Scheme was launched, allowing eligible sanctuaries to apply for up to €10,000 in funding for repairs and maintenance work.
The Directorate for the Proper Treatment of Animals remains committed to supporting sanctuaries through annual assistance schemes, ensuring continued aid for those caring for rescued animals.
