Edward Scicluna To Step Down From National Anti-Money Laundering Body

Former Central Bank governor Edward Scicluna is set to step down from his role on a national anti-money laundering committee, a government official has confirmed.

Scicluna, a board member alongside Attorney General Victoria Buttigieg and Police Commissioner Angelo Gafà, is currently facing trial for fraud linked to the 2015 privatisation of three public hospitals.

Other officials, including former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, are facing money laundering charges related to the deal, with all involved denying wrongdoing.

Committee chairperson Paul Zahra recently confirmed Scicluna’s departure with Times of Malta, saying that he will be “relinquishing” his role.

Scicluna has also been removed from the MFSA’s board and suspended himself as Central Bank governor, while continuing to receive half of his €69,000 salary as part of the deal.

Scicluna was finance minister when the government transferred the management of St Luke’s, Karin Grech, and Gozo hospitals to Vitals Global Healthcare in 2015. The contract was later taken over by Steward Health Care in 2018 but was annulled on fraud grounds last year.

He recently agreed to step aside temporarily to clear his name, along with former Health Minister Chris Fearne.
