The employee in question has been suspended from work temporarily. It was reported that the carer attacked the elderly man after an argument erupted in one of the retirement home’s wards.

The police are currently conducting an investigation on the case.

Lovin Malta reached out to St Vincent de Paul Long Term Care Facility for a comment.

“Our policy stipulates all actions to be taken in various levels on how these cases should be handled, including submission of police reports and internal investigations while the employee is refrained from performing caring duties until investigations are completed,” the spokeswoman said.

“In recent years, the St Vincent de Paul Management implemented a robust monitoring system with regular spot checks by the nursing management in all wards both during the day and night,” she told Lovin Malta, “Each spot check is fully documented and submitted daily to top management for review. The patient will be released from Mater Dei soon and he will be returned to St Vincent de Paul.”

TVM reported that a member of the accused carer’s family insisted that this was an unfortunate accident. The relative stated that the accused was trying to assist the man out of bed while helping out another patient simultaneously.

The elderly man however slipped and knocked his face against the bed’s barriers, before the carer could return to his side.

The family member also said that the accused has been a carer for the last five years, where he often worked after hours to assist the residents. Allegedly, the accused has stopped eating and is constantly asking about the patient’s condition.

The relative also said that the whole family is shocked as the comments on social media forced both the accused and his seven months pregnant partner to delete their Facebook accounts.

The victim’s family on the other hand, have declined to comment while there is an ongoing police investigation.
