Despite being from the PN wing, Shadow Minister for Education and Trades Justin Schembri commented on Grech Mintoff’s gesture, calling it “embarrassing”.

“After all, he is the country’s Prime Minister, whether you agree with him or not”.

The very vocal Sandra Gauci from the ADPD party took a similar stance, sharing her disappointment at what transpired on social media and writing, “Yesterday we confirmed that security in our country is a zero. Not even the Prime Minister is excluded. This time it was eggs. It could have been worse.”

PL MEP Cyrus Engerer also commented on the situation, stating that Grech Mintoff’s behaviour “is unacceptable from a party leader”.

“He has every right to have his own opinions, however in our country, every party leader has respected other leaders – even if they don’t see eye to eye.”

“This is the danger of the far right. Loads of politicians trying to make noise by using sensationalism and populism, rather than actual policies and ideas.”

“I enjoy seeing democracy come to life through active citizens who protest whenever they feel the need.”

“If leaders behave in such a manner, it just reflects poorly on them,” he concluded.

The leader of ABBA expressed his motivation for organising the protest, citing worries about the government’s deviation from Malta’s constitutional neutrality through its participation in NATO’s partnership for peace and deployment of Maltese soldiers on NATO military missions.

Grech Mintoff, the nephew of former Prime Minister Dom Mintoff, frequently associated with Malta’s Freedom Day, cautioned that such actions contradict his late uncle’s advocacy for Malta’s neutrality.

“How can the Labour Party let him use parliament and Mintoff’s Freedom Day monument to convince us that previous PL leaders lied to us? How can the PL government sign a deal with NATO when the Maltese people decided 45 years ago that it doesn’t want to get involved in other people’s wars or enter into military alliances?”
