Enemalta CEO Sacking Confirmed Months After Energy Minister Denied Allegations

The sacking of Enemalta CEO Johnathan Cardona has been confirmed, two months after Energy Minister Miriam Dalli denied reports alleging his removal from the role.

The allegations were made in the midst of public uproar as Malta dealt with persistent and lengthy power cuts during Malta’s hottest heatwave of the summer back in July.

The series of nation wide power cuts sparked controversy all over the island with locals demanding compensation for business losses and inconveniences, with the nation ending up essentially paralysed by the terrible blackouts combined with the rising temperatures.

Now, Enemalta has confirmed Cardona’s departure from his role, where he will be pursuing a new career opportunity following a two-week handover period, according to a statement.

This means that Cardona spent two years in his role as CEO of Enemalta, which came after he overlooked the government agency responsible for the cash-to-passports scheme.

Chairman Ryan Fava is now set to take on Cardona’s executive role and lead the company’s management, who has chaired Enemalta since 2022.

“We have important projects ahead of us, such as the development of renewable offshore energy, more investment in land-based renewable energy, the creation of large-capacity energy storage systems and new interconnectors, as well as the electrification of vehicles and ports,” Fava expressed.
