Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, widely seen as Turkish President Erdogan’s main political rival, has been arrested and jailed pending trial on corruption charges.

Since sparking widespread outrage and protests across Turkey.

Imamoglu, a leading figure in the Republican People’s Party (CHP), is also facing allegations of ties to a terror organisation. Many are calling the charges politically motivated, aimed at blocking his expected presidential candidacy in 2028.

On Wednesday, mass protests erupted across the country, with critics saying his detention is yet another blow to Turkey’s democracy and rule of law.

Meanwhile, the Turkish community in Malta is set to hold a protest in solidarity this Sunday 23rd March at 2:30pm at the Triton Fountain in Valletta under the banner “Stand Against Government Tyranny.”

Imamoglu’s arrest comes just ahead of the CHP’s presidential primary, where he was widely expected to be nominated as the party’s candidate. Despite the arrest, CHP leader Ozgur Ozel confirmed the primary, involving around 1.5 million delegates, will go ahead as planned.
