European Parliament Lights Up For Orange The World Campaign
From 25th November to 10th December, the world is uniting for the annual UNiTE Campaign, a global call to end violence against women and girls. Just like every year since the initiative launched in 2008, the colour orange is front and centre.
The United Nations picked it as the campaign’s signature colour because it’s bright, bold, and impossible to ignore, a symbol of a future where women and girls live free from violence. For 16 days straight, people around the world are encouraged to wear it, share it, light up their buildings in it, and speak up about it.
The global movement, known as Orange The World, sees landmarks everywhere bathed in orange lights, from skyscrapers to community centres, each one sending a loud message: violence has no place in our homes, our streets, our schools, our workplaces, or anywhere else.
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola joined the global call to action by posting a photo of the European Parliament glowing in orange, part of this year’s UN-led effort to raise awareness about violence against women and girls.
In her message, she reinforced the campaign’s powerful message with the hashtags #OrangeTheWorld and #EndViolenceAgainstWomenAndGirls, standing in solidarity with the 16 Days of Activism and urging Europe, and the world, to keep pushing for a future free from violence.
Writing “A light for every woman and girl who has suffered in silence. A promise to every woman and girl who deserves safety, dignity, and a life free from fear. We owe them more than awareness. We owe them change.”
This annual push runs from the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women 25th November right through to Human Rights Day 10th December.
Each year, the UNiTE campaign focuses on a new theme, highlighting the different layers of gender-based violence and calling for communities, governments, and individuals to take real action.
