A Maltese grandmother has had her seven-year sentence confirmed by Malta’s Court of Appeals after she was found to have sexually abused her grandson, TVM have reported.

In a shocking story, the courts heard how the nine-year-old had suffered abuse by both his grandmother and his uncle, who lived in the same home, in a case that went back to 2009.

The boy, whose father is a Libyan national that was not present for many years of the boy’s life as he was abroad, had been brought up by his maternal grandparents.

The abuse had been discovered when the father returned to Malta

Upon returning to the island, he had asked to be recognised as the boy’s natural father as he wanted to spend more time with him. However, when they were together one day, the boy attempted to touch and kiss his father’s partner.

Upon seeing this, the father asked where he had learnt this behaviour and why he was acting like that. The boy then opened up about what his uncle was doing to him, and what his grandmother had later done to him.

It was heard that the uncle had raped the boy in their family home, which the boy said had “hurt”, as well as watched pornographic films with him on several occasions.

The boy had then repeated what he had learnt from his uncle with his grandmother

At first, she had tried to stop her grandson from acting in a sexual manner with her, and reprimanded him for his behaviour. However, she eventually gave in to his behaviour.

The grandson said that he had engaged in sexual behaviour with his grandmother everywhere from the bedroom to the shower, and that it had occurred various times. He also alleged that his grandmother had initiated some of the occasions herself.

In her appeal, the grandmother denied the allegations, saying the boy’s father had told the 9-year-old to lie about her as revenge for not allowing him to marry her daughter, whom the grandmother says was too young at the time.

The nine-year-old was put on several medicines as he was unable to control his sexual urges nor sleep following the sexual abuse

Eventually, the situation became so problematic the father was forced to induct his son into an institute.

After hearing the appeal, presiding Judge Consuelo Scerri Herrera said she didn’t believe that the boy had lied about his grandmother, and noted that the boy had said the uncle had hurt him.

She confirmed the grandmother’s original seven-year sentence, and recommended that she be kept in Mount Carmel hospital’s forensic section.

The boy was also ordered to be placed under a three-year protection order.
