Ħamrun Barber Kusi Will Reportedly Be Deported Tomorrow, After 13 Years Living In Malta
Ħamrun barber Kusi Dismark, who despite having spent 13 years living and integrating in Malta, was recently detained, will be deported to Ghana on Friday, MaltaToday has reported.
Dismark was denied asylum and ordered to return to his home country 13 years ago but opted to stay in Malta and was arrested while at his hair salon on 21st January.
Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri has insisted that this decision was “fair”, pointing out that several people in a similar situation had left the country willingly and arguing that “no one should be given an advantage over others and everyone should be treated equally”.
However, a number of people have urged the government not to detain the man, as he has successfully integrated into Maltese society, saving funds for studies at MCAST and subsequently opening his hairdressing salon.
A protest is being organised by the migrant community and assisted by NGOs including ADITUS and Moviment Graffitti on Sunday – two days after the man’s alleged deportation.
The protest will be demanding the prompt release of Kusi and calling for an end to government raids that result in the apprehension and potential deportation of law-abiding members of the migrant community.
“I’m scared…terrified. I have to start life again at 37,” Kusi said, expressing his worry at having to restart his life after 13 years in Malta, where he has built a life, a family, and fostered several friendships.
“My hope was Malta. I invested my hope, energy, and ambition in a country that called me home.” he continued.
The man is currently being detained at the Safi detention centre.
