Hats And Shades For A Good Cause! Naxxar Middle School Raises €1,500 For Twin Brothers With Rare Incurable Genetic Condition
Naxxar Middle School Maria Regina College has successfully raised €1,500 and still counting… and it’s all for an amazing cause supporting two of its students.
The school held its Hats and Shades Day yesterday in support of the Len and Jacob Wellness Fund, dedicated to 11-year-old twin brothers Len and Jacob Galea, who both live with Zellweger spectrum disorder, a rare genetic condition that is incurable and has dramatically affected their motor skills, coordination, cognition development and speech capabilities.
Students and staff contributed to a €2 donation and were encouraged to DIY their hats and sunglasses for the day, turning this into an inclusive and fun initiative.
Lovin Malta spoke to Mr Renzo Galea, Headmaster of the Naxxar Middle School at Maria Regina College.
“Our school community is always looking for ways to spread awareness about important issues, and this time, we put a special meaning behind it!,” Galea said of the inspiration behind the event. “Len and Jacob, wear sunglasses due to their condition, so we thought—why not turn this into a positive and inclusive event?”
The school also held informative sessions and a therapeutic yoga class, thanks to Len and Jacob’s parents.
Reflecting on the success of this event Mr.Galea made it a point how this initiative went beyond fundraising.
“While we raised funds, our biggest goal was to promote awareness, sensitivity, and inclusion within our school and beyond. The engagement was incredible, and the positive energy was contagious!”
When asked if Hats and Shades Day would become an annual event, Mr Galea remained open to further possibilities. “We’re excited to organise more events, spread even more positive vibes, and continue using social media as a force for good. Let’s keep the momentum going!”
Lovin Malta has also been informed that all funds raised this year for Len and Jacob will go towards going to the Istituto Giannina Gaslini, a well-known children’s hospital in Genoa, Italy.
With donations still coming in, this school community is eager to continue making sure that Len and Jacob, and other students with similar needs receive ongoing support.
