Ħaż-Żebbuġ resident Eman Azzopardi won a Citizen Award at this years’ Malta Waste Reduction Awards in recognition for a weekly clean-up campaign he organised in his hometown.

Azzopardi started the ‘Giving Back Fridays’ campaign, a weekly clean-up in Ħaż-Zebbuġ, in 2020 after spotting large amounts of trash on the streets and has since managed to fill up some 400 rubbish bags over 100 sessions.

At yesterday’s Malta Waste Reduction Awards, organised by WasteServ Malta, he was awarded the Citizen Award, beating off competition from fellow clean-up activist Chantelle Cassar and Glenn Galea.

He received €1,000 in prize money for his efforts, which he promptly donated to the Ħaż-Żebbuġ local council to help it plant trees in the locality.

The gesture didn’t go unnoticed by Ħaż-Żebbuġ independent councillor Steve Zammit Lupi, who thanked Azzopardi for his campaign and for raising awareness against littering.

Well done Eman!
