Health Department Issues Warning Over Popular Maltese Snack Jungle Sticks

A health warning has been issued over one of your favourite childhood snacks – but you only need to be worried if you are gluten intolerant.

Malta’s health authorities wanted to point out that no matter what the packaging on your bacon-flavoured Jungle Sticks says, the crispy sticks DO contain gluten, and could really hurt you if you are allergic to gluten.

“The Environmental Health Directorate within the Superintendence of Public Health wishes to inform the public that from information received from the company involved, said product must not be consumed by persons allergic to gluten due to an error on the label,” a press statement said.

A labelling error led to Darrell Lea, the company behind Jungle Sticks, issuing the warning

Darrell Lea offers a number of gluten-free products, so the company must have been shook when they realised they had mistakenly said the Jungle Sticks didn’t contain gluten when it did.

And for all those who are not allergic to gluten then, congratulations, you get to feast on the crispy treats to your tummy’s content and your room smells like bacon seasoning.
