High Profile: Police Officer Suspended For Cocaine Use And Info Leaks Provided Security For Roberta Metsola And Ian Borg

As more information continues to emerge on the elite police officer who was suspended after testing positive for cocaine and leaking sensitive information, it has now been confirmed that he provided security for some of Malta’s most high-profile figures.

Kurt Rizzo, who is the son of ex-police commissioner John Rizzo and the brother of a magistrate, formed part of the elite Special Intervention Unit. As part of his job, he served in the security details of people like Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg, and European Parliament President Roberta Metsola.
It is however very unlikely, given how national security details tend to work, that any high-profile figure, be they Maltese or otherwise, would have the power or right to ask for specific officers to be a part of their security detail. Also, considering the Special Intervention Unit is a highly exclusive and elite unit within the broader national police force that numbered less than 2,500 in total in 2020, it would make sense that Rizzo would be involved in most of the high-profile operations around the country.

Beyond testing positive for cocaine in recent days, Rizzo is reportedly also under investigation for alleged ties to drug dealers as well as leaking “sensitive police information” to external parties.

This is the second such instance that was revealed in recent weeks, with police officer Cherise Camilleri being accused of leaking information related to police operations for months “and possibly years” just last month. Later, gym owner Ruud Buhagiar was actually charged with bribing officer Camilleri to obtain information on police operations.

As investigations continue, Rizzo – who, like Camilleri has denied the charges against him – was suspended from his duties and is currently on police bail.
