Home Affairs Minister Denies Existence Of ‘Punishment Chair’ In Corradino Prison
Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri denied the existence of a ‘punishment chair’ at the Corradino Correctional Facility.
Reports had been made that prisoners were being tied to the ‘punishment chair’ naked with a sheet over their head.
Shadow Minister Beppe Fenech Adami posed a question to Camilleri regarding the existence of said chair during a parliament sitting earlier today.
This comes after newspaper ‘Illum’ claimed that a prisoner was tied naked to the ‘punishment chair’.
Despite denying said claims, Camilleri confirmed that a single prisoner had previously been tied to a chair, although this happened before he was made Home Affairs Minister.
He added that the aggressive prisoner was tied to the chair to stop him from hurting himself, and that this was done on the recommendation of a doctor.
The Corradino Correctional Facility has come under fire recently following the sudden death of 25-year-old prisoner Ihtisham Ihtisham, a Pakistani national.
Malta’s Chamber of Advocates even called for prison director Alex Dalli’s suspension after his alleged “abusive treatment” of Yorgen Fenech’s lawyer, Charles Mercieca.
