The hottest day of the year so far has been recorded in the UK as a temperature of 34.8°C has been reached in Cambridge.

According to the British Met Office, this marks only the 11th year since 1961 that such high temperatures have been recorded, with eight of those years occurring since 2000, and six in the past decade.

The previous hottest day of the year was 19th July, when central London reached 31.9°C.

Despite the heat, the Met Office issued yellow weather warnings for thunderstorms in northern England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, while the UK Health Security Agency issued a yellow heat health alert for several regions.

Additionally, a yellow heat health alert is in place until 9am on Wednesday for various regions, indicating minor health and social care impacts.

The Met Office clarified that the current hot weather does not qualify as a heatwave, as temperatures need to exceed a specific threshold over three consecutive days to meet the criteria.
